A VGA connector has a total of 15 pins that are placed in three rows. They are commonly found in projectors, monitors, computers and other types of display devices. Their main function is to transport the video signals that have been converted into analog to a computer’s monitor.
Although it is quite useful, a lot of display devices used today are digital. With this, they have to change a VGA cable’s analog signal back to digital. This ultimately results in the degradation of video quality in monitors that use a VGA cable.
A Slow Death
VGA cables have been connecting monitors since the birth of modern computing. However, computers and display manufacturers have started to adapt to the newer HDMI and DisplayPort technologies that allow for less power consumption and space along with higher resolutions.
At the same time, AMD and Intel have announced that they will stop support for the VGA cable in 2013. They also expect the technology to die out by 2016 an be replaced by HDMI and DisplayPort. Many types of video cards have already stopped supporting VGA cables.
It is also not a surprise that these two leading names in the computer world are starting to do away with VGA connections. Getting rid of VGA cables also means slimmer laptops that allow for more clear high resolution and more vibrant display than the 20-year-old VGA technology.
Although it is experiencing a slow decline, VGA cables still offer users some advantages over DisplayPoint and HDMI. One of these advantages is that it is still a widely-used computer format that provides a high definition 1080p output. At the same time, many VGA cables are still widely used because not all modern television sets support the 1:1 pixel ratio mapping technology the HDMI utilizes.
Many people have also reported to achieve better and brighter performance when utilizing VGA cables with a number of well-known electronic products. At the same time, HDMI cable performance is below that of a VGA cable when connected to a high-definition input terminal.
Problems With HDMI
A number of users have also reported flickering color when they are using HDMI with their electronic devices. This unique problem does not happen when they are using a VGA cable connection. Additionally, a VGA cable’s performance is much better especially when used with gaming consoles such as the Sony PS3 and the Xbox 360.
There is also no easy access option that can help change the resolution when using an HDMI connection. This vital drawback causes a number of potential problems while an electronic device is broadcasting a high definition signal.
At the same time, a number of CRT monitors do not feature a connector for HDMI or DisplayPort cables. With this, only a VGA cable can be used. A VGA cable can still operate efficiently at up to 150 feet as long as it is properly shielded.
VGA cables are also inexpensive. They have an average price of around $10. At the same time, people who have a CRT monitor that is not getting a good signal can simply upgrade their VGA cable to obtain much better performance.
In all, a VGA cable is perfect for old television sets, monitors and other similar devices. At the same time, HDMI technology needs to evolve much further. Due to this, using a VGA cable may be a good idea amidst all of the latest technological developments.
